Memory is a sport that is growing in popularity, especially in Canada. I started using mnemonic strategies to teach math facts, spelling rules and music notes in a small-town elementary classroom before it was a thing. Years later I found others who knew these 'brain secrets' and memory competitions they took part in. To help kids practice their skills, I coached kids to use these same techniques memorize decks of cards, long strings of numbers and names of random strangers. For a few years, the top ten memory athletes in the nation were students from my own homeroom, including one who earned 4 national titles in 3 different memory events, with her first one at the age of 8. Currently I am teaching an entire K-6 school the times tables using these strategies and am coaching the largest memory club in Australia. Join me and learn strategies that can be learned by any child.
